EMU Department of Nursing Provides Training on the Prevention and Early Diagnosis of Cervical Cancer

Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU), Health Sciences Faculty, Department of Nursing organized an educational training on “Prevention and Early Diagnosis of Cervical Cancer” with the aim of contributing to the protection and promotion of women’s health. Led by the Akova Women’s Association, the program was held at the Akova Village Women’s Association building and was offered to volunteer women aged 18 and over residing in the village.

The education program was delivered by EMU Health Sciences Faculty, Department of Nursing faculty member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rojjin Mamuk and senior instructor Dr. Emine Temizkan Sekizler. The program covered the definition, prevalence, and impact of cervical cancer on women’s health in detail, drawing attention to the importance of raising public awareness and preventive healthcare services.

As part of the program, key risk factors such as early sexual activity, multiple partners, smoking, compromised immune systems, and HPV infection were discussed with participants. Attention was also drawn to cervical cancer prevention, underlining the significance of safe sexual practices, healthy living habits, and routine health check-ups.

The importance of the HPV vaccine in preventing cervical cancer was explained in detail. Information was provided on the appropriate age groups, dosage, and individuals for whom the vaccine is recommended, while the purpose, application process, and frequency of Pap smear and HPV tests were also outlined. The training further emphasized that early detection greatly enhances treatment success.

The training program also emphasized the importance of improving women’s health literacy and empowering them to take an active role in managing their health. Participants’ questions were answered at the conclusion of the training, which helped raise awareness and promote preventive behaviors against cervical cancer.
